Recipe: Facon sandwich
Smokey, spicy, and crunchy, my crispy tofu facon is a real treat. {nf, v, pb, df, gf*}
I recently had some vegan friends over and I decided to make one of my favourite flavour-packed sandwiches: marinated tofu smothered in brown/red sauce, held together in a soft white sourdough. After everyone had tried it, we all realised that it tasted a lot like bacon (fake bacon or facon!) After that it's become a bit of a staple for me when I'm after a slightly healthier version of a Sunday morning classic.
By marinating both sides of the tofu slices in a tomato, soy glaze, you get a punchy salty sweet flavour. I'd really recommend smoked tofu here to add an extra layer of flavour. And don't forget the paprika, it lifts everything with an extra smokey spicy finish.
Just like any other bacon sandwich, white bread is essential, and my preference is a thick, pillowy sourdough.
